Mary was born between 1865 and 1866. This was extrapolated from the 1880 census where she was enumerated in the household of her father, John P. Surginer. At the time of the census she was 14 years old. She married Benjamin Holt when she was 17-18 in 1883. She died during childbirth circa 1887. She left Benjamin with two young sons. Soon after Mary died Benjamin left the children with Mary's parents and moved to Lamar Co., Texas where his brother John had moved. There, he met and married Ida May Jackson on April 8, 1888. He returned to Alabama to get his children and family lore states that he wound up having to steal the children, John L Sullivan Holt and William Tuhoskie Holt, away in order to regain custody of them after his subsequent marriage to Ida May.
1880 United States Federal Census for Limestone Co., Alabama. Listed on the census as a child of John and Henrietta Surginer. Mary was not listed on the census's for following years as she died between census years.
