Beatrice was the sixth child of John Sutherland and Caroline Rooth. She spent most of her childhood in Toronto, Ontario, where her father worked as a freight agent. [1]
In 1908, she married Evelyn Macleod, a Bank of Nova Scotia accountant,[2]and had two children, Norman, who was born in 1910 and died in 1912, [3]and Donald Sutherland, who was born in 1914.

Not long after Donald's birth, the Macleods moved to Kingston, Jamaica, where Evelyn continued to work for the bank.[4] They lived in Constant Spring, a neighbourhood in the north of Kingston.[5]
About 1922, Evelyn's work took him to London, England. The family crossed the Atlantic on the Empress of Australia and moved into 76 North Gate, Regents Park. In 1937 they were still living at this address and continued to do so throughout the war. [6] The following year, during the Blitz, they were forced to move into 49 North Gate (Prince Albert) after 76 was bombed. In 1946, Donald, who was a Warrant Officer with the Royal Artillery, was killed in Austria.
After returning to Canada, the Macleods lived at 30 Elm Ave. in Toronto, Ontario. Bea died at the Toronto General Hospital on June 28, 1962. [7] She was buried at Forest Lawn Mausoleum, Toronto.[8]
