Biography

Horatio Sutherland is a member of Clan Sutherland.

Horatio, born in 1829,[1] was the second-born child of Captain Edward Sutherland and Christiana Coffin, although the age he died (72) given on the English Death Index of 1898 [2]and the 1891 England Census [3] would indicate he was born in 1826 rather than the 1829 given on other documents. He grew up in Sydney, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, where his father served as Town Major.[4]

At some point before 1862, Horatio moved to England. He married Elizabeth Woodland Ford, a widow, in the summer of 1862 in London. [5] In 1866 they may have lived at 88 Cotton St. in Limehouse, London. [6] At the age of 39, on January 22, 1868, he was awarded his certificate as Master in the Merchant Service.[7]

In the 1887 Electoral Register, Horatio is listed as a lodger at 92 Graham Road in Hackney. [8] In April, 1888, Elizabeth died. In the 1891 England Census Horatio and eight-year-old Edward Sutherland have lodgings at 32 Albion Square in Hackney. The census records don't indicate Edward's relationship to Horatio.[9]

Horatio's occupation is listed as "engineer, mining" in the 1891 England Census. After his brother Douglas's death in 1865, he and his father, Edward Sutherland, acted as executors for the estate. They applied for a patent that would improve on Douglas Sutherland's invention for making blasting cartridges more effective (patent #2251 granted in 1864).[10] This notice appeared in the 1867 Alphabetical Index of Patentees and Applicants for Patents of Invention: "12th January 1866 Edward Sutherland, Capt of 22 Wilson Street, Stepney and Horatio Sutherland of No 88 Cotton Street, Limehousc for an invention for Improvements in obtaining fibre suitable for spinning and other uses by the use of a plant not hitherto employed for this purpose. A communication to them from abroad by Signor Joseph Vamina d Etienne residing at Lesa Logo Maggiore in the Kingdom of Italy. Provisional protection only."[11] In an 1884 list of patents granted by the U.S. Patent Office, however, Horatio alone is listed as the patent owner of a "quartz crusher or mill."[12]

In 1884, Horatio also applied for a patent for the quartz crusher in New South Wales. He gives his address as 66 Holborn Viaduct, London.[13] Kelly's Directory of Chemists and Druggists (1885) lists Sutherland's "Rheumaticon" Manufacturing Co. at this address. Sadly, both of these business ventures failed.

Here's an article from the 1886 Chemist and Druggist:

Horatio Sutherland 48 Southampton Row Vendor and Manufacturer of Patent Medicines The receiving order in this case was made on March 8 and accounts have been filed showing gross liabilities of 4,836 10 and expected to rank 4,489 against assets returned at 127 10 The following is the report of the Official Receiver on the debtor's accounts and preliminary examination The debtor states that in May 1882 he entered into arrangements with a certain firm who agreed to finance him in respect of a patent medicine that the business in reference thereto was transferred to a company in September 1884 that owing to the failure of the aforesaid firm in February 1885 the company went into liquidation and in October 1885 the debtor took over its liabilities and assets and has since carried on the business thereof under the style of Sutherland & Co

He died in Hackney in 1898[15] and was buried at Abney Park Cemetery.[16]
