born 24 Oct 1819, twin of Alexander baptised 25 Oct 1819 Rogart. Parents William Sutherland, Langwell and Isabel Mackay[1]
Note
He worked as a stonemason on the statue of the Duke.
Robert Sutherland 1819-1867 was a stonemason, and worked on the statue to the 1st Duke of Sutherland at Ben Bragghie, and was supposed to have been the first mason to have thrown a stone over the statue. Whoever told my grandmother that must have had a few whiskies, I can't imagine how anyone could throw a stone over the statue.[2]

Note
The Sutherland family were known as McKain to distinguish them from other families called Sutherland. My cousin Iain Laing, whose family they were, told me this.
Note
Payments for poor relief were made to Robert from 20 April 1855 until his death in 1867 at the age of 48. Initially the payments were of one shilling per week, although the payments were increased until he was receiving 3 shillings per week.[6]
