Ronald D. Sutherland, the son of Edward Sutherland and Kate Goodeve, was raised in Ottawa, Ontario, where his father was a civil servant.[1] He trained as a civil engineer, earning his B.Sc. at McGill University[2], before attending the Royal Military College.[3]

During World War I, he signed up for military duty with the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force on December 14, 1914. [4] He was attached to the 24th Battalion, Victoria Rifles of Canada [5] but is recorded as having been a Captain at Headquarters, 4th Brigade, Canadian Engineers, 1919. [6] (The 4th Battalion was organized in France. [7]) On February 24, 1917, his name was brought to the notice of the Secretary of State for War for "valuable services rendered in connection with the war."[8] Ronald was awarded the Military Cross,[9][10] awarded for distinguished service in battle to commissioned officers of the rank of Captain or below,[11] in 1919.[12] He attained the rank of Major,[13] and after the war was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General in the non-permanent active militia (NPAM), earning an E.D. (Efficiency Decoration) in 1943.[14] [15]

After the First World War, he was employed as merchandise manager, Canadian Westinghouse. After the Second World War, he was appointed branch manager at Rogers Majestic Limited in 1946. He was a member of the Engineering Institute of Canada.[16]

In 1930, Ronald married Jean Pollock in St. James United Church, Montreal, Quebec.[17]
