Biography

Janet is believed to be the mother of James Sutherland according to family Bible from Fisher Town, Golspie.[1]

Janet is estimated to have been born about 1770, probably in Golsipe, Sutherland, this being based on date/place of marriage. [2]

Research Notes

It has been suggested that Janet is the daughter of William Sutherland and Janet Murray.

This ID seems unlikely [3]because:

that Janet was baptized in 1755
which would make her 36 at marriage to Donald, rather later than unusual
that Janet was from Catchery in Watten, Caithness
Janet and Donald married in Golspie, Sutherland, which although not impossible seems an unlikely place connection being in different counties.

Additional, or continuing, research has revealed that the marriage of Donald Sutherland and Janet Sutherland in 1791 produced offspring in addition to the one child, James who had been established for some time. The births of the additional children range from 1796 to 1816. This of course adds additional information on which to speculate about a birth date for Janet, and her spouse for that matter. Were Janet to be born in 1770, she would have been 21 at the time of her marriage to Donald in 1791and she would have been 46 years old at the time of the birth of Ebenzer in 1816; physiologically possible, but unlikely. I am going to suggest that Janet, and probably Donald as well, were both younger when they were married than was typical for Sutherlands at that time.

My 2x's gr. grandmother, Helen, who married James Sutherland, son of Donald and Janet, was 17 years old when she married James, who himself was not much older at 18. It would be useful to research the births of Janet Sutherland, in Golspie Parish for the years 1768 to 1773. If Janet were born in 1773 she would have been 18 years old in 1791 and 43 years old in 1816. My 2x's gr. grandmother was 42 when she gave birth to my great grandfather, David.

I do not believe Janet was born in Watten, Caithness, but her parents or grandparents may have been born in Latheron Parish, Caithness. The search continues.

I have a birth record for Janet Sutherland born 10 October 1773. Daughter of Alexander Sutherland, Wright in Culmaily, Golspie Parish. The record is 051/ 20 13 Golspie.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Janet by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Janet:

Sutherland-1806 and Sutherland-1167 appear to represent the same person because: Sutherland-1806 completes the hypothesis of Sutherland-1167. The autosomal matches of Sutherland-3043 and Sutherland-2914, confirm that Sutherland-1167-represents the same person as Sutherland-1806

I have an FTDNA Family Finder autosomal DNA match to both Duncan Sutherland a descendant of William Sutherland (Sutherland-1802, born January 11, 1747 in Watten, Caithness; and Robert I Bain a descendant of William Sutherland, Jr (Sutherland- 943) born 1716. Janet Sutherland born 1755 in Catchery, Watten, Caithness. I believe Janet is the autosomal link.
