Biography

George Sutherland is a member of Clan Sutherland.

I think it is reasonable to believe that this is the George Sutherland who was born on 7 December 1838 in East Clyth. His parents were Robert Sutherland and He(l)len Henderson who lived in the Parish of Latheron in Caithness.

George Sutherland and Isabella MacGregor were married on 4 December 1863 at Shebster. In the marriage certificate George is stated to be a farm servant of 26 years, from Upper Dounreay, while Isabella is 23, with the same occupation and residence. His father Robert Sutherland was dead by this time, his mother Hellen Henderson still alive. The marriage was conducted according to the forms of the Free Church of Scotland. There was a Free Church at Shebster, now ruined. Once married they lived in succession in: Upper Dounreay where daughter Janet was born in March 1864; then they lived about 34 miles south in Borgue, Berriedale, where son Robbie was born in January 1866. They moved back north to Bardnaclavan, where Charlotte was born in January 1867 and lived at Achscrabster, north of Halkirk, where Hellen was born in August 1869 and where George worked in a now disused slate quarry .

After this, they were recorded as living once again at Bardnaclavan at the time of the 1871 Census and at nearby Oust, where James was born in April 1872.

The family then moved south once more, to the southerly parish of Latheron, and specifically Ousdale, by Johan’s birth in 1874 and in the 1881 Census they still lived in Ousdale adjacent to (and perhaps part of) the now abandoned Highland Clearance village of Badbea.

George Sutherland died on 4 January 1894 in Ausdale from asthma of 6 years duration complicated by pneumonia of 8 days duration. In the Census of 1891 he was described as a retired farm servant

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with George by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with George:
