Biography

William (Sutherland) Sutherland IIIrd of Sciberscross is a member of Clan Sutherland.

William was the son of Capt. Adam Sutherland 2nd Laird of Sciberscross. He held Sciberscross under a wadset, his land being valued at £239, 2s 8d in 1771. He was a member of Dornoch Council, and Bailie of Dornoch by 1729. In Jun1 1746 he commanded a company of the Earl of Sutherland's militia, receiving a commendation for bravery. He became Sheriff Substitute for Sutherland in in 1750 and is listed as a Council member in 1763.

He was named as liable for land tax in 1752, and from 1760 to 1785 was taxed for a house with 10 or 12 windows. He was also taxed on owing a carriage, which were very rare in Sutherland.
