William [1]is presumed to have been born around 1755, probably in Latheron, Caithness. This clearly indicates he is a son of the Blackness family.
Married 9 Feb 1772 Latheron, Caithness, Scotland [2]
Children:
William was the second son and according to the Rev George Sutherland, a descendant of the Blackness family, William inherited Golsary farm from his maternal grandfather after whom he was named, William Sutherland, Tacksman of Golsary.
A great deal of work has been done in recent years on the membership of the Sutherland of Blackness, Sutherland of Golsary and Sutherland of Catchery families who all descend from the main cadet branches of the Sutherland family. These three families have intermarried many times over many generations. A frequent problem is the limited use of Christian names owing to all 3 families strongly adhering to the traditional Highland Scottish naming pattern.
As a result it appears there are 5 distinct William Sutherlands married to Ann Sutherlands at exactly the same time and in broadly the same location (Parish of Latheron and adjacent parishes of Halkirk, Wick, Thurso and Canisbay). All of these locations are within a day’s walk. Please therefore do not suggest merging profiles or worse still actually merge profiles which look like the same person within these families without consulting Mark Sutherland-Fisher Genealogist of Clan Sutherland first. All these families have children with the same names born often within months of one another.
It's a reasonable bet to assume that any of the baptisms shown in the Latheron Parish Register to William in Golsary belong, provided the dates don't conflict among the children.
The Marriage date shown is unverified and not immediately obvious in the Latheron Parish Register. Indeed it may be that this couple is the one which married on 2nd January 1778 at Canisbay. It post-dates the birth of son Adam, which doesn't necessarily mean it is wrong, as it could be his dates that are inaccurate. One died 1855, married to Alexander SUTHERLAND, the other 1864 married to James CORMACK. More work is needed to distinguish the two, so for now the unmerged match of the parents should stand, despite what I said below!
although I don't believe the Canisbay couple married in 1778 are "your" William and Ann, I do believe that the unmerged matches listed for the couple should proceed. They definitely had a daughter Margaret, who married James CORMACK.
Sutherland-3257 and Sutherland-888 appear to represent the same person because: Daughter Esther shown is definitely the same Esther. Cannot merge the Esther's without merging the parents, which involves resolving discrepancies. I suggest that we discount the 1778 Canisbay marriage shown for William and Ann as unlikely for a Latheron based couple with at least one child who looks to well predate that date.. Has anyone any evidence that Esther's William and Ann were ever at Aukingill, which is where the couple of that name marrying in Canisbay were when they married?
BUT, even without the DNA, Canisbay and Latheron as the respective contemporary William Sutherland's places make the id also unlikely IMO
