Biography

William (Sutherland) Sutherland Farmer at Golsary is a member of Clan Sutherland.

William [1]is presumed to have been born around 1755, probably in Latheron, Caithness. This clearly indicates he is a son of the Blackness family.

Family

Husband: William Sutherland
Wife: Ann Sutherland

Married 9 Feb 1772 Latheron, Caithness, Scotland [2]

Children:

Adam (abt 1770 - 1855) [3]
Esther (abt 1783 - 1855) [4]
Margaret (abt 1786 - 1864) [5]
William [6]
Amelia

William was the second son and according to the Rev George Sutherland, a descendant of the Blackness family, William inherited Golsary farm from his maternal grandfather after whom he was named, William Sutherland, Tacksman of Golsary.

Research Note

A great deal of work has been done in recent years on the membership of the Sutherland of Blackness, Sutherland of Golsary and Sutherland of Catchery families who all descend from the main cadet branches of the Sutherland family. These three families have intermarried many times over many generations. A frequent problem is the limited use of Christian names owing to all 3 families strongly adhering to the traditional Highland Scottish naming pattern.

As a result it appears there are 5 distinct William Sutherlands married to Ann Sutherlands at exactly the same time and in broadly the same location (Parish of Latheron and adjacent parishes of Halkirk, Wick, Thurso and Canisbay). All of these locations are within a day’s walk. Please therefore do not suggest merging profiles or worse still actually merge profiles which look like the same person within these families without consulting Mark Sutherland-Fisher Genealogist of Clan Sutherland first. All these families have children with the same names born often within months of one another.

It's a reasonable bet to assume that any of the baptisms shown in the Latheron Parish Register to William in Golsary belong, provided the dates don't conflict among the children.

The Marriage date shown is unverified and not immediately obvious in the Latheron Parish Register. Indeed it may be that this couple is the one which married on 2nd January 1778 at Canisbay. It post-dates the birth of son Adam, which doesn't necessarily mean it is wrong, as it could be his dates that are inaccurate. Henderson-2297 21:31, 7 November 2018 (UTC) [However it is now believed that Adam was in fact son of one of the other William and Ann couples].

Sutherland-4414 and Sutherland-888 appear to represent the same person because: These are both William Sutherland who farmed at Golsary and married to Ann Sutherland.
Great work spotting this duplicate - it looks as though someone has added another copy of my 4th gt grandparents without noticing I had already put them on. They are definitely my cousins

Sutherland-2744 and Sutherland-888 appear to represent the same person because: Another Golsary/Blackness merge
Grant, FYI there are two Margaret SUTHERLANDs of approx. the same age, both with dth certs. showing them to be daughters of William SUTHERLAND and Ann SUTHERLAND.

One died 1855, married to Alexander SUTHERLAND, the other 1864 married to James CORMACK. More work is needed to distinguish the two, so for now the unmerged match of the parents should stand, despite what I said below!

Grant,

although I don't believe the Canisbay couple married in 1778 are "your" William and Ann, I do believe that the unmerged matches listed for the couple should proceed. They definitely had a daughter Margaret, who married James CORMACK.

Notes re suggested merge

Sutherland-3257 and Sutherland-888 appear to represent the same person because: Daughter Esther shown is definitely the same Esther. Cannot merge the Esther's without merging the parents, which involves resolving discrepancies. I suggest that we discount the 1778 Canisbay marriage shown for William and Ann as unlikely for a Latheron based couple with at least one child who looks to well predate that date.. Has anyone any evidence that Esther's William and Ann were ever at Aukingill, which is where the couple of that name marrying in Canisbay were when they married?

This is possibly William married to Ann Sutherland and they lived in Golsary. If so William inherited Golsary from his maternal grandfather of the same name. William would then be the son of Donald Sutherland in Blackness.
John, atDNA is rather randomly inherited with, on average, 50% lost per generation, once any connection is beyond 2nd/3rd cousin the odds get rapidly smaller that any two people will inherit a shared segment of DNA from the same ancestor, so lack of an atDNA match isn't really conclusive.

BUT, even without the DNA, Canisbay and Latheron as the respective contemporary William Sutherland's places make the id also unlikely IMO

Mr. Hallam shares no DNA segments with R. I. Bain per GEDmatch results so, a match between Sutherland-888 and Sutherland-4414 seems unlikely?

Sutherland-896 and Sutherland-888 do not represent the same person because: seems unlikely that the same William of the Golsary line married in both 1718 and 1772
