William Lanfear Sutton was born on 7 November 1846. He was the son of Thomas Sutton, a Master Mariner, and Mary Lanfear.

His father Thomas died on 5 February 1849 at age 58. His mother remarried.

William married Margaret “Maggie” Puflett on 10 January 1870. Notice of their marriage was printed on page 2 of The Herald (Melbourne, Vic. : 1861 - 1954) dated Monday, 17 January 1870:

Sadly his wife Maggie died soon after the birth of their only son, on 11 October 1870.

He married, secondly, Jane Mary Tonkin on 7 October 1871 at the residence of the bride's father at Autumn Street, Ashby, Geelong, Victoria[2]. They went on to have nine children.

In about 1878 he relocated his family from Victoria to Launceston, Tasmania where he took up the job as Station Master.
