Biography

Alfred Sutton was born in 1862 in Cressing, Essex, England^[1], the son of Thomas Sutton and Rachel (Young) Sutton. Thomas and Rachel already had two children Matilda and George and later had another daughter, Alice.

In 1871 the family were living in Cressing^[2], where Thomas was an agricultural labourer.

By 1881^[3] another daughter, Margret, had been born. Thomas was still an agricultural labourer, along with George and Alfred.

In 1883 Alfred married Jane Young^[4], and by 1891^[5] they had three children: Richard, Frank and Florence. Alfred was still working as an agricultural labourer. 1891: The Street, Cressing, Essex, England

By 1901^[6] the family had grown, with the addition of Emily, Charles, Ernest, Rachel and Margaret. The family grew further with the births of Nellie and George. 1901: Cressing, Essex, England

By the time of the 1911^[7] Census, Charles and Ernest were also agricultural labourers. The 1911 census confirms that, at that date, Alfred and Jane had had ten children, all of whom were still living. 1911: Cressing, Essex, England

Alfred died on 12 February 1940^[8], still living in Cressing and letters of administration were granted to his eldest son, Richard, who by that time was a gardener^[9].

"SUTTON Alfred of Long-green Cressing Essex died 12 February 1940. Administration London 16 April to Richard Sutton gardener. Effects £169 9s 1d."

Alfred’s estate was valued at £169 9s 1d (equivalent to about £6,600 in 2021^[10]).
