Alfred Sutton was born in 1862 in Cressing, Essex, England[1], the son of Thomas Sutton and Rachel (Young) Sutton. Thomas and Rachel already had two children Matilda and George and later had another daughter, Alice.
In 1871 the family were living in Cressing[2], where Thomas was an agricultural labourer.

Alfred died on 12 February 1940[8], still living in Cressing and letters of administration were granted to his eldest son, Richard, who by that time was a gardener[9].
"SUTTON Alfred of Long-green Cressing Essex died 12 February 1940. Administration London 16 April to Richard Sutton gardener. Effects £169 9s 1d."
Alfred’s estate was valued at £169 9s 1d (equivalent to about £6,600 in 2021[10]).
