Dinah Sutton was born before the 22nd of August 1824 in East Meon in Hampshire, England.She is the daughter of George Sutton and Jane Hibbard. Her mother Jane died when Dinah was just four years old in 1928. Her father George married again in 1830 or 1831about 21/2 years after her mother's death.

The census recorded on the 6th June 1841 shows Dinah Sutton as being 15 years of age, no occupation is given. She is living with her father and her stepmother, her half-siblings and a Thomas Beams who is possibly the son from her stepmothers first marriage. They are all living in Frogmore, East Meon, Hampshire, England[3] There are no occupations listed in the census it could be sumised that the father and stepson were farm labourers, as this is the occupation listed in New Zealand.

Dinah grew up with her half-siblings and possibly step-siblings in Hampshire, England and traveled with the family to New Zealand on the 29th October 1841 departing from Gravesend an ancient town in the northwest area of Kent, England, on the ship the Bolton. The record list both the departure port and the arrival port or point of entry as being Canterbury, New Zealand. Dinah is listed as being 17 years old with the birth year of 1824. Dinah's occupation is given as Streamstress which is probably a spelling mistake and she was a Seamstress, meaning she made and mended clothes[4]

They had ten children who all appear to have survived to adulthood.
Dinah (Sutton) Parkes passed away aged 75 years, she died on or before 18 Apr 1898, she was buried in Richmond Cemetery, (old row 4 plot 30)[7][8]
