She passed away in 1934 age 57.[4]

MRS PETER SMITH A resident of 25 years’ standing Mrs Ethel Minnie Smith, wife of Mr Peter Smith, of 180 Church street, Palmerston North, passed away on Monday evening after a comparatively short illness. Mrs Smith, who was a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs William Sutton, was born at Richmond. Nelson, her parents having been early settlers of that district, and she received her education at the Richmond School. When in Masterton she was married to Mr Smith in July. 1909, and the young couple went to Palmerston North to take up their residence. For the past two months Mrs Smith’s health had been indifferent and, with her condition becoming worse, it was deemed necessary for her to enter hospital for treatment, but she died on Monday evening, leaving a husband to mourn his Joss. There were no children of the marriage. There are seven sisters and three brothers who survive her. Two sisters are residents of Sydney, but the majority of the members have their homes in the Wellington and Nelson districts. The brothers and sisters are Messrs Con Sutton (Richmond), Albert and Robert Sutton (Wellington) ; Mesdames R. Louisson (Nelson) and J. Beach senior (Richmond), J. White (Levin), D. Scott (Feilding), Misses C. Sutton (Christchurch) and G. and A. Sutton of Sydney. A woman of a very kindly disposition Mrs Smith was loved by all who knew her. The funeral took place at the Kelvin Grove Ceremony, when the Rev. J. S. Pate conducted the graveside services.[5]
