Biography

Sutton (Unknown) was born about 1657.

Sutton married first William Brown, about 1674. They had, probably at Portsmouth:

  1. Martha, b. abt 1675
  2. Jane, b. abt 1677
  3. Tobias, est. b. abt 1679

William died before March 1681, and Sutton married John Bailey before September 6, 1681. In March of 1681, "John Bailey" and "widow Sutten Browne" were indicted for fornication. The bill was quashed September 6, 1681, probably due to their recent marriage, as Sutton was then described as "widow Sutten Browne now wife of John Bailey".[1] Futhermore, the 1733 will of John Bailey gives to "...Each of my Two Daughters In Law (Viz't) Martha Simms and Jane Rogers...", who were Sutton's children from her first marriage.[2]

Unless John Bailey had a first wife, he and Sutton had, all mentioned in his will except Sarah:[2]

  1. Sarah, b. February 27, 1681[/2][3]
  2. William, b. 1684[3]
  3. John
  4. Samuel, b. abt 1688 (aged 71 in 1759)[4]
  5. Thomas, b. 1690[3]
  6. Mary
  7. Abigail, b. 1693[3]
  8. Ruth,

Sutton died February 13, 1729/30, possibly at Newport (her husband's residence when he wrote his 1733 will)[2] and is buried in the John Bailey Lot at Middletown, Rhode Island.[5] The inscription on her gravestone reads:

Here lieth ye Body
of Sutton ye wife
of John Baley died
Febr ye 13 1729/30
aged 73 Years

Research Notes

Unsourced genealogies claim that Sutton was actually a "Lydia Sutton" or "Alice Sutton". The source of these names is not known, though possibly conflated with Alice, wife of Samuel Bailey, and Lydia, wife of John Bailey (Junior). The sources we do have of her give her first name as "Sutton". Her last name is currently unknown. If anyone finds sources or can prove that Sutton is actually her last name, please post a comment and explain it.

The website "Rhode Island Historic Cemetery" probably cites the unpublished cemetery transcripts by G. H. Richardson in 1892. They have additional information recorded from gravestones that has not survived, including:

  • Elisabeth, maiden d/o John and Sutton, b. 1698, d. September 20, 1723[6]
  • Ruth, maiden d/o John and Sutton, b. 1700 d. October 3, 1726[7]

A previous version of this profile had her marriage to John Bailey be on 5 Apr 1681 at Portsmouth, but this is unsourced, and I cannot find the source - though the date does fit. Changed to bound as discussed above, with this note here.

Made Changes so Lydia Sutton is now Sutton (Unknown), added sources and biography.

What are the sources that John Bailey married a "Lydia Sutton"? As far as I'm aware John Bailey married the 'widow Sutten Browne'.

This profile is the daughter of 'George Sutton', whose daughter Lydia seemed to have died an infant. I think either this profile should for be for her, or it should change to Sutton LNAB Unknown. I've made a profile for Sutton's first husband William, but I'm waiting for this issue to be solved to add his wife.

Sutton-395 and Sutton-82 appear to represent the same person because: Believe this is one Lydia Sutton.
