When Nils Petter Nilsson went into the Swedish military service in 1833 he was given he surname Ahlberg and when he left the service he retained it.
Due to Swedish custom at the time the sons received a surname consisting of their father's first name with the suffix -son added and daughters received a surname consisting of their father's first name with the suffix -dotter added. This practice was discontinued in the latter 1800s.
And hence there were many individuals with the same names, so they were assigned a new surname. when they were discharged they had the option of retaining it or returning to their original surname.
