Mary Swain, daughter of Caleb Swain and Margaret (Paddack) Swain, was born on Nantucket Island in 1735.[1] She married Shubael Coffin there in 1764.[1][2]
Mary and Shubael and their family removed from Nantucket to New York State in 1779, joining the Nine Partners Monthly Meeting of Friends.[3] In 1804, they transferred to the Hudson Monthly Meeting.[4][5]
Research Notes
There is record of a Mary Coffin who died at Athens, New York on 9 Nov 1828.[6] Whether this is the same Mary Coffin is uncertain, but the location matches that of her husband's death in 1811 and the Quaker meeting matches that of her last known affiliation. The Mary Coffin who died at Athens, New York in 1828 was listed as age 88, about 5 years younger than this profile's Mary Coffin would have been--not a close match, but perhaps within the range of variance often seen in the records.
