Samuel Swan was born ca 1676 at Eagleton Plantation, Charles County, Maryland. On 28 September 1703 Samuel Swann was a witness to a document [CCLR Z.68]. Samuel Swann married Ann Burch, daughter of Oliver Burch and Barbara Tennison [born about 1685] in about 1705 [MCW VI.117]. In 1707 the Chaptico Hundred Rent Rolls show Samuel Swann possessed of 292 acres of land called Hopewell, which his father had resurveyed in 1669. Samuel Swann and his sister, Susannah Briscoe, are named as next-of-kin in the inventory of their brother, James Swann of St. Mary’s County, Maryland, in 1707 [I&A 27.145]. On 2 May 1723 he took part in the re-survey of the boundaries of the Eagleton Plantation [CCLR, R#2.4]. On 19 June 1725 Philip Briscoe of St. Mary’s County, physician, conveyed to Samuel Swann of Charles County, carpenter, “all that tract of land formerly belonging to Edward Swann, Sr., being part of Egglestone, given tohis [Edward’s] daughter, Susannah, in consideration of her marriage; containing 80 acres”, acknowledged by Philip Briscoe and Elizabeth, his wife [CCLR L#2.231]. On 12 April 1727 Swann’s Forrest, 96 acres, was surveyed for Samuel Swann [SMRR, p. 88]. In 1735 he was a carpenter. In 1738 his brother, Thomas Swann, conveyed 292½ acres to Samuel Swann’s son, Burch Swann. The will of Susannah Briscoe [born Swann] in 1739 mentions Samuel Swann as her brother. Samuel Swann left a will dated 17 April 1743 and proved on 1 June 1743 [Charles County Will Book, Liber DD#2, fol. 99-100; MCW VIII.225; Wills 23.136]. His next-of-kin on 17 August 1743 were his sons Burch Swann and Edward Swann and his executrix was his wife, Ann Swann [Inventories, 28.161]. The Account of his estate was entered on 30 May 1744 and was given by his executrix, Ann Swann. The value of his estate was £30:16s:4d [AA 20.256].
While some sources (lythgoes.net Person ID I15367 Lythgoe-Donaldson) suggest he was born in 1653, his birth year, 1676, is calculated from the Maryland Genealogical Society Bulletin Vol. 33, no. 4, Fall 1992, Charles County Depositions, which states he was age 55 on 22 July 1731.
