Sarah Estmer Swanson was born on August 1, 1922, in Pontotoc County, Mississippi, to Ludie May Dodson, age 16, and William Earlie Swanson, age 31. She was the first born child of 20 children, all by the same natural parents. She was born prematurely and fed with an eyedropper by her young mother, who was told by the doctor that she would not live. She contracted pneumonia at the age of three and was again not expected to survive. Her father crafted a drainage tube through her ribs and saved her life.
She married Nylan Winford Coleman on November 13, 1937. They had six children in 21 years.
She died Thursday, May 30, 2013, at her home in Russellville, Arkansas, and was buried near Bruce, Mississippi, in the Collums Cemetery. [1] An excellent grandmother, cook, seamstress, and gardener, she had a green thumb for growing plants and flowers.
