JONAS MAGNUS SVENSSON “SWANSON” was born on May 25, 1840 in Röshult Östergård, Stenbrohult, Kronoberg, Sweden. He was the son of Sune Svensson and Ingrid Persdotter. His father worked as tenant farmer at Röshult Östergård, but around 1841 he moved the family to another farm called Gemön (Sune’s brother Anders was here) and then to Froafälle in 1846. In 1859 Magnus moved away from his family and lived in the Agunnaryd Parish in Kronoberg, Sweden. He is later noted to be living with his older brother Sven at the Grythult Lillegård farm in the Agunnaryd parish. Sven is noted to have drowned in 1865 and on 11/29/1865 Magnus left and moved to the Norra Sandsjö parish in Jönköping county (~41 miles northeast). He married Emma C. Björkman (6/30/1846-unknown), daughter of Sven Johan Bjorkman and Maria Charlotta Petersdotter, on 12/31/1865. They had 3 children in Sweden: Sven Magnus Reinhold “Reynold” (6/28/1866-1943); Emaly “Emily”; and Charles “Oscar.” They immigrated to America sometime around 1872 and eventually settled in Osceola County, Michigan. Magnus and Emma had 5 more children in America: Edith; Anna; Ellen; Sophia; John and Fred. Magnus owned a farm in Rose Lake but was also a mason. Because of his trade he earned the nickname "Stonewall Swanson." In August 1883 their children Sophia (3yrs old) and John Otto (11mo old) died due to “inflammation of bowels.” Emma died on 8/12/1914 in Traverse City and Magnus died on 2/9/1921 in Sherman, Michigan.
