Biography

This profile is part of the Swartwout Name Study.
Anthony Swartwout was born in 1664 and baptized May 11, 1663 at Kingston, Ulster, New York.[1] He died before January 1700 at Machackemeck, Orange, New York.[2]

Gumaer history of Deerpark [3]

"FIRST SETTLERS. In the year 1690, as near as can be determined, Jacob Cuddeback, Thomas Swartwout, Anthony Swartwout, Bernardus Swartwout, Peter Gumaer, John Tyse and David Jamison, settled in the present town of Deerpark, in the County of Orange and State of New York, on and near a handsome knoll or hill contiguous to a spring brook and a spring of living water, in the central part of the Peenpack flats. This spring still remains near its first location, but not as flush as formerly. The upper surface uf this hill is flat, and its elevation about 20 feet higher than the lowland surrounding it. The Indian name, " Peenpack, "was, by certain of the ancient people, said to be significant of this hill and spring.

The three Swartwout brothers that were owners of the original Peenpack patent were:

Thomas Swartwout b. ca 1659 Beverswyck (Albany), New Netherlands (oldest son of Roeloff Shout of Esopus.) d. ca 1723 Maghagkmeck, (Deerpark) Orange CO, NY, m. Elizabeth Gardiner abt 1682 dau. of Jacobus Janse and Josigja Gardnier.
Records can be found for him and his family living on the patent lands.
Antony Swartwout bap. 11 MAY 1664 Dutch Reformed Church at Kingston, Ulster CO, NY, (son of Roeloff Shout of Esopus.) d. ca. 1700 Maghaghkemeck, Orange CO, NY, m. Jannetje Jacobus Coobes / Cobus, 8 MAY 1693. Received certificate Dutch Reformed Church at Bergen, NJ to DRC Kingstown, Esopus.
I think that he lived on patent, probably from the early days until his death, supposedly there in 1700, (Maghaghkemeck).
Bernardus Swartwout bap. 26 APR 1673, (Mother listed as Eefjen.) Dutch Reformed Church at Kingston, Ulster CO, NY, (youngest son of Roeloff Shout of Esopus.) M. 1700 May 19 Dutch Reformed Church at Kingston, Ulster CO, NY. Rachel Janse Schepmoes bap. 31 March 1678 Kingston, Ulster CO, NY. Dau. of Dirck Jansen Schepmoes and Maria Willems.
The Swartwout Chronicles state that Bernardus, son of, Roeloff Shout of Esopus, never lived on the lands. That he was unmarried when he purchased the lands with his older brothers Antoni and Thomas, but just held onto them, probably renting them out until 1741 when he sold lot 31 to his nephew, Jacobu Swartwout, b. Mar 1996, 2nd son of Anthony Swartwout , bp. 1664. Possible that he did live on the patent for a short while.
The Gumear history notes that he settled there and had a home, but Bernardus Coobes/ Coombes Swartwout (son of Antony Swartwout bap. 11 MAY 1664.) bap. 31 OCT 1697 Dutch Reformed Church at Kingston, Ulster CO, NY. d. 1773 Lehman Twp., Northhampton CO, PA, m. Margaret Grietjen Dekker. inherited his share of his late fathers land on the patent upon reaching majority and this may have been the Barnardus that Gumear was thinking about.

Swartwout-256 and Swartwout-31 appear to represent the same person because: This is the oldest paternal ancestor in this chain in need of a merge into the NNS PPP. No tree conflicts. Alternative marriage is married May 8, 1693 so perhaps the earlier date of April 30 was the banns. Thanks!
