Tomas Swartwout is Notable.

Thomas Swartwout (born 1607 at "De rechte Jat" [1], Groningen, Groningen, Nederland, d. 1660 in Amsterdam) son of Roelof Swartwout (b. abt 1570 in Groningen) and Trijntien "Catryna" (b. abt 1572 in Groningen). He was famous as one of the earliest importers of tobacco from New Netherland to Western and northern Europe, one of earliest settlers of New Netherland, and a founder of Midwood (Midwout), Brooklyn, New York.

Tomys (Thomas) Swartwout married:

  1. Ariaentje Sijmons [2] April 7, 1630, daughter of Sijmon Sijmons and Catryna Grebbers.
  2. Heyndrickjen Barensdochter (Otsen ?) June 3, 1631 in Amsterdam, Holland. She was born 1611 in Amsterdam, Holland [3] , and died Aft. 1649 in Amsterdam, Holland. [4][5]

On 14 August 1651 Jan Jansz Baptista, Thomas Swartwout and Hendrickge Barents went to notary Jacob de Winter in Amsterdam and a testament was made, this very likely was done because they were planning to go to Oost Indien (New Netherland), Thomas Swartwout is described as bootsgezel on the ship Den Oliphant (the Elephant) and his adress in Amsterdam is the Middelstraat. [6] It probably was this ship de (Witte) Olifant that was built for the Amsterdam chamber in 1639 and used by the VOC, on 3 January 1652 it sailed from Texel (via Kaap de Goede hoop) to Batavia (arrival 7 May 1652) (captain Klaas Jansz. Both) [7] When they arrived in New Netherland in 1652 landing at Manhattan Island, they were greeted by Director General Pieter Stuyvesant . Thomas located on the west end of Long Island and gave the name of the new village, Midwout.

Member of Dutch Reform Church. Elected Judge of Midwout to represent them at the first provincial assemble of the Colonists of New Netherlands, at Ne Amsterdam, Dec. 9 1653. About 1655 in New York [8] Received on march 7, 1661, from Director general Stuyvesant the instrument of writing placing him in legal possession of his farm of 58 Morgens, about 116 English acres. Shortley after, he returned to Amsterdam, there he passed away and was buried on 15 October 1679 in Amsterdam[9].

Steven,

I'm still working on cleaning this profile up after numerous merges.

Swartwout-324 and Swartwout-25 appear to represent the same person because: they were in an unmerged match & the New Netherland Settlers Approval System (http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:New_Netherland_Settlers_-_Approval_System) now has them marked "Green" (NNS Category) and "Orange" (Merge Pending), indicating that the two are ready to be merged. Thanks!
