E.S. was born Sept 28, 1863 in Evangeline Country Nova Scotia to Leander and Lorena Brown. His "nickname", Sandy was given to him by his mother. Her favorite author was Marshall Saunders, who went by the name Sandy. Nobody really knew that Sandy was not Edwins real name, everyone called him Sandy. Sandy owned a store and hotel in Country Harbour. At this time, the mines were active and full of gold. In the center of his store stood the Cross Roads Post Office. The telegraph operator was Ada Giffin. In 1897, he built a new store, and soon after, his store and hotel were illuminated by gas. The first flush toilet in the community was in his hotel. The second floor of the store was used as a public assembly hall. He married Ada Olivia Giffin October 5, 1885 at Goldboro Nova Scotia. Edwin (Sandy) and Ada last lived at 1304 Spring Street in Syracuse. Both are buried in the cemetery in Hubbardsville NY near Sandy's father, Leander. Sandy died July 27, 1957. [1]
