Dale Raymond Sweet
SWEET, Dale Raymond – Age 76, of Sutherlin, passed away on Friday, August 1, 1997 at a local hospital. He was born February 21, 1921 in Pt. Terrence, Oregon, son of Marion J. and Clara F. (Wroe) Sweet. His family owned a ranch on the mouth of Sweet Creek. He was raised and educated in the Mapleton area. Dale entered the U.S. Army to serve our country during WWII in the European Theatre. As a member of Company B. of the Ninth Infantry, he was involved in the 2nd wave to invade Normandy. He was awarded the European-African-Middle East Theatre Medal as well as the Purple Heart and a Oakleaf Cluster. He was united in marriage to Eleanor Taylor on June 13, 1948 in Mapleton, Oregon. Dale worked in the timber industry as a logger and in mills. They lived in Florence, Oregon from 1979 until 1992 when they moved to Sutherlin. He was a member of the Siuslaw Mason Lodge No. 192, becoming a master mason in 1983. Dale enjoyed the outdoors including hunting, fishing and rock hounding. He also enjoyed bowling. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Eleanor Sweet of Sutherlin; two sons, Russel Sweet and his wife Joan of Roseburg and Steven Sweet and his wife Martha of Sutherlin; three grandchildren, Richard Kramer and his wife Karol, Kari Gorder and her husband Brent, and Ira Sweet and his wife Davina; four great-grandchildren with one more on the way. He was preceded in death by two brothers. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Roseburg V. A. Hospital Chapel. Officiating will be Pastor Ted Jones. Private family inurnment will be at the Roseburg National Cemetery. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of TAYLOR'S FAMILY CHAPEL.
