Biography

Jonathan Sweet was born 1739 in Rhode Island the second son of Samuel Sweet and mother, Sarah. He served in the NY Militia during the post French and Indian War with his older brother, Samuel. He lived in Pittsford, Vermont from 1776 to at least 1790. He lived on a farm in Whipple Hollow where he surveyed roads and signed a Petition to create a new church parish. He was married twice. First to Ede Wilcox, b. Rhode Island, then to a second wife about 1776, currently unidentified, but likely Mary who may have gone by "Betsey", whose last name has been suggested as Bowery, or possibly Brower, but unproven. His death date and place is unknown, but likely New York around 1820. Template:Under research

  • Two different cousins that live in different states have given me this information. The one distant cousin lived in the area in Ohio where the Sweets lived and a relative gave her a family tree that confirms Barton's father.

Jonathan Sweet had land in Whipple Hollow, Pittsford, Vt. He had sons Robert W. born about 1768 and Barton born 1778. Possiblity of other children. This Sweet family appears to have moved from Vermont before 1800.
