John Sweeting Sr. is part of a Bahamian family.

Biography

John Sweeting lived in Gregory Town, Eleuthera, Bahamas; he may have been born there, but quite likely died there.

He married Elizabeth Newbold 6 June 1840 at Pitman's Cove (Gregory Town), Eleuthera. John was 33 years of age and Elizabeth was 31 years of age.

From a message posted on the Bahamas Genealogy Group: Written: 27 Dec 1860 - Recorded 28 Feb 1863. "Lodged the 6th of Nov. by John SWEETING " Bahama Islands, Eleuthera. Will of John SWEETING Senior of Pitman's Cove, Planter. "Signed at Gregory Town in Island of Eleuthera."

John named his wife, Elizabeth, and all eight of his children in this 1860 will. The surviving children: Catherine Sweeting Johnson, Charlotte Sweeting Bethel, Sarah Sweeting Bethel, John Sweeting Jr., Benjamin Sweeting, Jeremiah Sweeting, William Sweeting, and Augustus Sweeting.

Was he a son of Samuel Sweeting and Patience McKay?

There are five Sweeting family groups listed under New Providence in the Book "C" Census (circa 1740). The surname also appears on Governor Phenneys' 1721-1726 List of Baptisms, Marriages and Burials and in Woodes Rogers' 1731 Census.
