Biography

Laurentius (Lorantz or Lorentz are also used) Schweißguth^[1] was born Feb 23, 1723/24 in Germany--probably in Wiesdbaden, Wiesbaden, Hesse-Nassau, Prussia, Germany. Laurentius's father was Johannes George Schweissguth. Laurentius died in 1789 in Pennsylvania, probably York County. Lorentz's name appears in the records in Germany as Laurentius and Lorentz. The Lutheran Church used the Latin Laurentius and the government used the German Lorentz.^[2]

Lorentz was admitted as a Burger (adult citizen) at Wiesbaden, Nassau-Usingen, Germany on Dec 22, 1746. In 1746 Wiesbaden was part of Nassau-Usingen Province, Germany, which had it's first Lutheran pastor in January 1, 1543. Lorentz was trained to be a stone mason and shoemaker. Lorentz left his stone mason tools to his son, Phillip Swissgood.^[3]

Laurentius was married twice.

• He first married Catherine Elisabetha Mayer 16 Aug 1746 in Weisbaden, Hesse-Nassau, Bierstadt, Germany (Bierstadt is now a section of Wiesbaden, Germany). Catherine was born circa 1726 in Bierstadt, Hesse-Nassau (Germany). Catherine was the daughter of Bernhardt Mayer and ? ?. Catherine died circa 1760 in Paradise, York County, PA.
• He next married Elizabeth Saltzgeber in 1761 in Paradise, York County, Pennsylvania. Elizabeth was born est. 1726. Elizabeth was the daughter of Dietrick Saltzgeber 'Teeter' and ? ?. Elizabeth died after 1800.

Pennsylvania

Laurentius immigrated from Germany through Rotterdam to Philadelphia, Colonial Pennsylvania on Sep 16, 1751 on board the ship HMS Edinburgh.^[4]

Lorentz, Catherine, Sophia, and Maria arrived on 16 Sep., 1751 in the Port of Philadelphia, PA aboard the English sailing ship Edinburgh. They sailed from Rotterdam, via Cowes, England, to Philadelphia. Lorentz was given the Oath of Abjuration (renouncing former citzenships) on 16 Sep., 1751.^[5]

Lorentz settled in Paradise township, York County, PA on the west side of the county. Here he owned 100 acres. Lorentz constructed a stone cottage. Laurntius was an Evangelican Lutheran and attended Jacob Lischy's church in York County, PA.

1. Margaret E. or Maria Margaretha Elisabetha Schweissguth (1749-1806), born in Germany, died in North Carolina, married Godfried Ratz (1743-1804) in 1780 in North Carolina
2. Sohpia Elisabetha Schweissguth (1747-?), born in Germany, died in North Carolina, married Johann Heinrich Clement (1737 - 1807)
3. Johann Adam Schweissguth (1752-1833), born in Pennsylvania, died in North Carolina, married Anna Marie Catheron Beck (1764 - 1852)^[7]
4. Phillip Schweissguth (1754-1798), born in Pennslvania, died in North Carolina, married Eva Sophia (Helmstetler) (abt. 1760 - 1821) in about 1785
5. Andreas Schweissguth (1755-1796), born and died in Pennsylvania, married Sarah Blocher (abt. 1760-?)
6. Margarent Catherine Schweissguth (1761-?), born and died in Pennsylvania, married Michael Spangler (1758 - 1854)
7. Elisabeth Schweissguth (1766-1843), born and died in Pennsylvania, married Peter Atland (1767-1852)^[8]
