James (Swenney) Swinney Sr. is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A208493.

The first confirmed record for James Semore Swinney's father, Moses, is when he appeared in the 1764 List of Tithes for Cornwall Parish, Lunenburg Co., Va. Cornwall Parish encompassed the part of Lunenburg County that would become Charlotte County in 1765. From there, Moses Swinney moved on to Pittsylvania Co., Va. where he died in 1785. Based on this, we suspect James Semore Swinney was born in one of the counties along the southern border of Virginia, not in Monroe County as some researchers believe.

Moses Sweney's last will was proved in a Pittsylvania Co., Va. court on June 20, 1785 suggesting he died a few weeks or months before that date. In his will he only specifically mentioned one of his children, James Semore Sweney, but later in the will said, "at the decease of my well-beloved wife, all my moveable property is to be evenly divided between my children and Josiah Mapples." Josiah and Ruthea (Sweeney) Maples later moved to east Tennessee; however, James Semore Swinney/Sweney moved to an area of Monroe Co., Va. that likely became Giles Co., Va. in 1806, then Mercer Co., Va. shortly after his death.

Emma Swinney Walker relates that three Swinney brothers cam e from County Cork, Ireland, and settled on the Susquehanna River in Pennsylvania. One brother may have returned to Ireland. The brother Moses settled in Monroe County, VA. Emma covers James Swinney and Susanna Hammock and lists eleven children.

The Swinney & Dunlap Family History by Lee Ora May Swinney , as given to her by two widow aunts. The aunts are: Mar y (May) Parthena Swinney Overbury, and Maude (Myrtle) Lee Swinney McAfee.

According to Myrtle & May Swinney,as told to them by the ir grandfather, William Christian Swinney, and William being the son of Samuel Harrison Swinney, claimed that James Semore Swinney was from Cork County, Ireland. This fact is to be researched.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:

Swinney-11 and Swenney-2 appear to represent the same person because: These appear to be the same person. Date of death and father are the same. Last name should be Sweney as it appears in his father's will. Date of birth should be early 1750s. Middle name is likely Seymour after the mother's maiden name, but the father's will spelled it Semore as here. While the last name is Sweney like the father's, the name changed to Swinney when members moved to Monroe Co., Va. (later W. Va.). I'll be happy to add a little more biographical information when the two Profiles are merged.
