Biography

In 1850, Benjamin Sikes (Sykes), age 20, lives on property he values at $4000. Living with him are George W. McDonnel, age 24, John Tarkington, age 19, and Jesse Liveryman, age 16. All are listed as laborers.

On October 8, 1850, he, along with Bartlet Jones as bondsman, secures the right to marry Angelico Creef, daughter of Joseph Creef and Mary Amanda "Polly" Holmes.

Angelico calls herself Ann G or Ann on the Census throughout her life.

Benjamin and Ann have the following children: Benjamin (b 1853/54), Charles W. (b. 1862), John W. (b. 1869), Samuel W. (b. 1872), and Martha E. (b 1875)

Ann G. Sykes died on May 5, 1895 in Elizabeth City, Pasquotank County, North Carolina and is buried in the Old Hollywood Cemetery at Elizabeth City.

In the 1900 Census, Benjamin is living with his son, John W. and wife Elizabeth, their baby, Remington Sykes, age 1 and Benjamin's daughter Martha Sykes, age 27

Benjamin passed away on May 26, 1903 and is buried beside Ann in the Old Hollywood Cemetery.
