Biography

Edwin Sykes was born in 1890 at Deddington in Oxfordshire, the son of John Sykes and his wife Elizabeth, born Elizabeth Turvey [1] [2] [3].

In 1891 Edwin was living at the hamlet of Twyford in the parish of Adderbury in Oxfordshire with his parents John and Elizabeth and their other children. His age was given as 1, implying a birth date in 1889 or 1890. [This age seems to have been rounded up.] His birthplace was given as Deddington, Oxfordshire [2].

In 1901 Edwin was living at Wales Street in Kings Sutton in Northamptonshire with his parents John and Elizabeth and their other children. His age was given as 10, implying a birth date in 1890 or 1891. His birthplace was given as Deddington, Oxfordshire [3].

Died on the first day of the battle of the Somme in 1916

Edwin was married to my Grandmother and in 1911 he was living in Birmingham and worked as a Flour roller in a flour mill.

He left his wife and son about 1913 and moved to Siloth where made home with another lady called Mary Goddard and adopted her older daughter and had two more children. He joined the Pals battalion (Lonsdale Regiment) of the Kings Own Border Regt. He went to France in 1915 and died on the first day of the battle of the Somme. He was aged 26, he is commemorated in Siloth, Deddington and also he is buried at the Lonsdale Cemmetry near Albert, France.
