John Sykes was born in 1852 in Deddington, Oxfordshire, England to Benjamin Sykes and Martha (Dale) Sykes. His birth was registered in Woodstock, Oxfordshire in the second quarter of the year, with mother's maiden name Dale.[1]
In 1861 John Sykes (age 9, Scholar) lived at Philcot Street in Deddington with his father Benjamin (40, Agricultural Labourer), mother Martha (41), and five siblings: Edward (20, Agricultural Labourer), Elizabeth (18), Thomas (16, Agricultural Labourer), Lydia (7, Scholar), and Emma (4).[2]
In 1871 John Sykes (age 18, Agricultural Labourer) lived in Deddington with his father Benjamin (49, Agricultural Labourer), mother Martha (50), and two siblings: Emma (14) and Henry (12, Agricultural Labourer).[3]
John Sykes married Elizabeth Turvey on 20 Jul 1872 in Deddington. The marriage was registered in Woodstock in the third quarter of the year.[4]
John and Elizabeth had one son before they were married: Thomas Sykes Turvey (1872-) - his birth was registered as Turvey, but he used the surname Sykes after they married.
In 1881 John Sykes (age 28, Carter Ag Lab) lived in Duns Tew, Oxfordshire with his wife Elizabeth (25) and six children: Thomas (8, Scholar), George H (7, Scholar), Emma (5, Scholar), Frederick J (4, Scholar), Auther W (2), and Sarah E (0).[5]
In 1891 John Sykes (age 38, Brick Maker) lived at Twyford Lane in East Adderbury, Oxfordshire with his wife Elizabeth (35) and eight children: George Hy (17, Brick Yard Labourer), Emma (15), Frederick (14, Plough Boy), Arthur W (12, Scholar), Sarah E (10, Scholar), Ruth (4), Lilian (2), and Edwin (1).[6]
In 1901 John Sykes (age 48, Builder's Laborer) lived at Wales Street in Kings Sutton, Northamptonshire with wife Elizabeth (45) and six children: Thomas (28, Village Lamp Lighter), Lillian (12), Edwin (10), Frances M (7), Elsie M (4), and Olive G (3), as well as "Step Son" [actually grandson] Arthur W S Sykes (0).[7]
In 1911 John Sykes (age 58, General Labourer) lived in Kings Sutton with his wife Elizabeth (55), daughter Olive (13), and granddaughter Amy (4).[8]
John Sykes passed away in 1931, aged 78 years. His death was registered in Brackley, Northamptonshire in the first quarter of the year.[9]
