Biography

Suzanne (Taillefert) Naude has French origins.

Synopsis

She was 2½ years old when she arrived at the Cape on 26 April 1688 aboard the "Oosterland" with her parents, 3 brothers and 2 sisters. In 1700, at the age of 15, she married Jean Gardé (d. 1704) and by him she had a son Jean, born in 1701, who remained a bachelor and a daughter Susanna born in 1703 who married Josua Joubert (eldest son of Pierre Joubert) on 5.7.1725. In 1709 Susanne married Pierre Cronier (Cronjé d. 1718) and by him had 6 children: Maria = 1.6.1710 married Jean du Buisso n on 14.6.1733, Elizabeth = 8.11.1711 married Francois Joubert on 18.2.1731, Pierre = 24.9.1713 married Susanna Roi [Roy] on 19.5.1741, Anna = 27.1.1715 married J.B. (Benjamin) d'Ailly on 31.10.1741, Izaak = 31.5.1716 and Magdalena = 20.2.1718 who both died young. After her death an auction held on the farm "Versailles" (owned by Pierre Cronjé, her late husband) in the Wagenmakersvallei (Wellington) on 12 May 1724 to dispose of her effects, raised 2015.70 rix dollars. [Auction Rolls MOO C 10/3 #53, Cape Archives, Cape Town]. C.Graham Botha's book "French Refugees at the Cape" records that "there was a wish expressed by the Directors (of the Chamber of XVII) that the French language should be superseded by the Dutch, and that as soon as possible. It is clear that French services were still held in 1718: and even in 1724, when Mrs. Jacob Naudé died, a 'service in the French language was held in the church' at her funeral. Attached to the inventory of Mrs. Naudé' s estate in 1724 is a document of monies due written in French, and that in connection with her funeral expenses this statement appears 'for the service in the church in the French language, 3 rixdollars'". [pg. 69]. Susanne was heir to her brother-in-law Estienne Cronier (Cronjé), a bachelor. When he died on 2.9.1724, she inherited the farm "Champagne". As she had already died by this time, the farm was registered in the name of her third husband Jacob Naudé. [1]

Hi Gillian, the short answer to your question you'll find here. There has been some discussion, and WikiTree now has the policy to put Massively Merged Profiles (that has received the PPP - or "Protected" - status) such as this one that fall within a project, under the custodial managership of the Project itself, in order so that the project can protect a) the LNAB and b) the parental connections (so that parents can only be disconnected after protection by the research coördinator or project leader, after due collaborative discussion and agreement). There has been some G2G discussion about this, perhaps you've missed it.
