James was born in 1809, the son of Alexander Tait and Margaret Younger. He was baptised on the 23 July 1809 at Wilton, Roxburgh, Scotland. On the 25 July 1839 James, his wife and daughter Ann left Burnfoot Mill Roxburghshire Scotland and embarked on the ship Palmyra in London, sailing to Australia, they arrived in Melbourne, Port Phillip District on the 25th November 1839. Their fares were paid by the Colonial Office which were 10 pounds for adults and 5 pounds for children. During the voyage to Australia James and Helen's eldest daughter died probably from typhoid. On arrival James was employed by Charles Williamson. In 1840 James was employed by James McVean on a farm at Connewarre, Victoria. James selected 126 acres of land on the shore of Lake Connewarre on the 5th November 1855, now known as Tait's point .They named their farm "Southbank" James adopted the name Connewarre from an Aboriginal name Koonoowarra or Conawarr, meaning black swan. They cleared their land and planted a market garden and had a dairy. James and Helen had a further 9 children James and Helen are both buried in the Mt Duneed Cemetery.[1]
