Takano Isoroku was born in Nagaoka, Niigata Prefecture on 4 April 1884. His father was Takano Sadayoshi and his mother was Takano Mineko. His name, Isoroku, translates to 56 in English, which was his father's age upon the birth of Isoroku. He graduated from the Imperial Japanese Naval Academy as a military officer in November 1904.

After his graduation as an officer in the Imperial Japanese Navy, he served in the Russo-Japanese War, during which he was wounded at the Battle of Tsushima. He was promoted to lieutenant commander in 1916, the same year he was adopted by the Yamamoto family under his well-known name of Yamamoto Isoroku. Two years later, in 1918, he married Mihashi/Mitsuhashi Reiko.

In 1919, Isoroku went on a visit to Washington, D.C., as he left Yokohama on 20 May and arrived at Seattle on 2 June via the Suwa Maru. He traveled to Washington again in 1921 when he left Havana, Cuba on 25 May and arrived at Key West that same day on board the Gov. Cobb. His oldest son, Yoshimasa, was born in 1922.

Isoroku was promoted to captain of the IJN in 1923. As a captain of the IJN, he was a delegate to the US Naval War College in 1924. At first, he specialised in gunnery before switching to naval aviation, for which he was responsible for developing in the IJN.

Meanwhile, Isoroku's oldest daughter was born in 1925. In 1926, he would visit Washington again when he departed Yokohama on 22 January and arrived at San Francisco on 6 February via the Tenyo Maru. His youngest daughter was born in 1929, and later that year, he went to London, departing from Yokohama on 30 November on the Siberia Maru and arriving in Seattle on 11 December along the way. In 1932, Isoroku's youngest son was born. Two years later, in 1934, he went to London again, traveling the same route as in 1929 from 20 September to 2 October via the Hiye Maru while en route.

After Isoroku was promoted to admiral of the IJN in 1940, he was responsible for overseeing the attack on Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941. In June 1942, he participated in the Battle of Midway, which saw the United States Navy turning the tides of the Pacific War against the IJN.

On 14 April 1943, codebreakers for the US Navy decrypted the messages concerning Isoroku's tour throughout the areas occupied by Japan, and on 18 April, the plane Isoroku was piloting was shot down by American P-38G fighter aircraft piloted by 1st Lt. Rex T. Barber in Operation Vengeance. The next day, the plane and Isoroku's body was found. His death decreased confidence in the Japanese military during the Pacific War. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of Marshal-admiral. His gravestone is located at Tama Cemetery in Tokyo, and he is also enshrined at Yasukuni Shrine.[1]
