Biography

Sir Gilbert Talbot, of Wadley, Hanney, Letcombe Regis and Wiclesham, Berkshire was the 2nd son of Sir John Talbot of Richard's Castle and Juliane de Grey. Knight of the Shire for Berkshire 1386. m. Margaret (Howard) de Clifton as her 2nd husband. 1 son Richard.

Sir Gilbert Talbot, Justice of the Peace for Berkshire & Wiltshire was born circa 1346 at of Wadley, Hanney, Letcombe Regis, & Wicklesham, Berkshire, England.He married

  1. Margaret de Beauchamp, daughter of Sir Roger de Beauchamp, 1st Baron Beauchamp of Bletsoe, Captain of Calais and Sibyl de Pateshulle, between December 1373 and 3 November 1376;
  2. Joan between 28 June 1382 and 18 November 1383; No issue. Her 4th marriage.
  3. Margaret Howard, daughter of Sir Robert Howard and Margaret Scales, between 13 February 1396 and 31 December 1396; They had 1 son (Richard). Her second marriage.

The abbot had previously leased the manor of Letcombe Regis for life to Sir Nicholas de Tamworth and his wife Joan, and it was confirmed to them by the king in 1361 and they received a grant of free warren here in 1367. After the death of Sir Nicholas Joan married Warin de Lisle, and later she took as her third husband Sir Gilbert Talbot. She died in 1392, when the manor was confirmed to Gilbert, who appears to have died before 24 April 1399, as the manor was then granted to Simon Felbrigg. [1]

In 1355 the abbot of Cluny received restitution of the manor, and a grant of it made by the abbey to to Nicholas de Tamworth and his wife Joan, for life, was confirmed by Henry, Duke of Lancaster, in 1361. After the death of Nicholas, Joan married Sir Gilbert Talbot, kt., with whom she was holding the manor for life in 1389, and who after her death received a grant in 1392 to hold for life during the war with France. In 1397 he received licence to purchase it with the advowson from the abbey for his life and a year beyond. Sir Gilbert died in 1399, leaving by his wife Margaret an infant son Richard. [2]

He died on 6 February 1399 at of Richard's Castle, Herefordshire, England.
