Biography

Sarah Talcott was born, probably Braintree, Essex, England, about 1603 (she was listed last among the children in her father's 1604 will and would have been 22 at estimated date of marriage), the daughter of John Talcott and his wife, Ann Skinner.[1][2][3] She died, probably Hartford, Connecticut, before 2 July 1644 (husband married again).

Sarah Talcott married, probably Braintree, by about 1626 (estimated birth of child), William Wadsworth, as his first wife.[4] He was born, surely England, about 1601 (estimated age at marriage), and died Hartford, between 16 June 1675 (overseers appointed) and 18 October 1675 (date of inventory), leaving a will dated 16 May 1675, proved 26 January 1675/6.[5] He married (2), Hartford, 2 July 1644, Elizabeth Stone.[6]

Sarah would have been an infant at the time her father wrote his 1604 will. It was proved 24 January 1604/5, by which time her mother had remarried to Moses Wall.[7] She was "Sara Taylcott" in his 16 October 1623 will.[8] In the January 1636/7 will of Ann (Skinner) (Talcott) Wall, she was, "My daughter Sarah, wife of William Wadsworth."[9] Ann's will does call out the names of Sarah's children, but rather, "To such children of my said daughter Sarah as were born at Braintree and are now living ..."

Immigration

William Wadsworth and his family immigrated to New England in 1632 aboard the Lyon.[10] In 1994, Robert Charles Anderson wrote,[11]

... on 16 September 1632, the Lyon made yet another voyage, bringing one-hundred-twenty-three passengers, the majority from Essex ... from ... Braintree came the prominent families of William Wadsworth and John Talcott.

At New England

The family settled first at Cambridge. In 1636, they were part of the group associated with Reverend Hooker, founding Hartford, Connecticut.[12] About Reverend Hooker's followers arriving early, Anderson noted, "Many of them were admitted to freemanship on 6 November 1632; since there was no church at Cambridge at the time, they must have been admitted to some other Massachusetts Bay church, presumably Watertown, whose early records no longer exist." He also wrote (1994),[13]

In August 1632 Governor John Winthrop noted that "The Braintree company, (which had begun to sit down at Mount Wollaston), by order of court, removed to Newtown. These were Mr. Hooker's company" [cites Wintrop's Journal 1:104-05]. The families effected were Talcott, Wadsworth, and several others who had come on the Lyon. They were the [leaders of the group following ...] Reverend Thomas Hooker ... [and] removed to the nascent town of Newtown (later Cambridge) to await the arrival of Hooker ..."

Would like to update Sarah's birth to "by about 1604," This is based on work in a Talcott-Skinner child list/family group, see Talcott-Skinner Child List, 2022.

Comments welcome. --Gene

If there are no objections, I plan to work on this profile a bit. Specifically, I plan to,
  • Add the Puritan Great Migration project box
  • Update the sources and profile sections to remove some GEDCOM traces and highlight necessary Puritan Great Migration information.
  • Update some sources and work on reports of her birth, marriage and death.
  • Add a child list, and related sources.

Thank you for supporting WikiTree. --Gene

Thank you. I will check further for a reliable source. Anderson reports she died by 1644 (husband had child by wife 2 in 1645).

Edited to add: The FindAGrave memorial has no stone. Quickly, I am not seeing anything to support her death at any specific date. If you know of a reliable source for any such date, please post. Have posted on G2G.
