Notes

Bartholomew Taliaferro was from Bergamo then a city of the Republic of Venice. Records indicate the family were in this at least as far back as 1256 A.D. They were of Jewish descent.

Origin

Bartholomew Taliaferro was born c. 1540 in Italy.[3][4]

When Bartholomew TALLAFER applied for residency in London on March 4, 1562, he described himself as a subject of the Duke of Venice.

Marriage

After moving to London, Bartholomew married on 1 Jan 1583/4 at St. Michael's, Cornhill, London, to Joane Lane (p 245). [3]

Bartholomew and Joane had nine children, including Francis Taliaferro. He died about September 22, 1601and was buried on that day at St. Olave's, Hart Street, London.

After his death, Joane remarried, on May 15, 1602, Thomas GRAYE of Whitechapel, County Middlesex, widower, at St. Olave's. She was living in the fall of 1609. Her second husband was buried June 12, 1617, at Whitechapel, and his will was dated May 12 of that year. [5]

London Census 1593

London Return of Strangers of 1593---"Talford, Bartelmew, keeps house, 1; his wife an Englishwoman: Italian of Bergamo [Pergema]; merchant; five sons 7, 6, 5 and two of 1 year, all English born; no stranger man or woman servant; dwelt in England42 years; denizen of the English Church; keeps two English maid servants; sets one Englishwoman to work." ---Irene Scouloudi, Returns of Strangers in the Metropolis 1593, 1627, 1635, 1639, A Study of an Active Minority [Huguenot Society of London, Quarto Series, v. 57: London, 1985], pp 145-46. Name

The name Taliaferro is pronounced Toliver. Thomas Jefferson was curious as to the origin of the family and requested a search in England. The actual origin was not determined until very recently. His neighbors in London were the Laniers who originated in Italy, moved to France and then England. They were Musicians. After his death his wife, Joane married Thomas Graye of Whitechapel Co., Middlesex, England on May 15, 1602, at St. Olave's. Elyzabeth T. married William Graye her stepbrother. Some researchers think that Joane was a Lanier and not a Lane, however in a census she is referred to as an English woman. If she was a Lane her father may have been Thomas Lane. Bartholomew lived at the time of Elizabeth I and Shakespeare.

Children

The children were Christened at St. Olaves, Hart Street, England. Some were buried at St. Olaves and St. Botalphs, Bishopsgate, London. In his will Bartholomew named his "fower" sons Scipio, ffraunces, Isaack and Ieromme[Jeromme]- and his daughter Elizabeth. Bartholomew Jr., Katherine and Horatio had died before this time.

Taliaferro-39 and Tagliaferri-6 appear to represent the same person because: Bartolomeo Tagliaferri was born in about 1530 and married Joane Lane about 1 Jan 1583 in St. Michael's, Cornhill, London, England. Their son, Bartholomew Taliaferro Jr, was born on 9 Dec 1596, but only lived one day and is buried in St Olave Hart Street Churchyard, London, England.

The birthdate of about 1530 can't be right if the couple's son Bartholomew was born in 1540, nor can the couple's marriage date of 1583.

Taliaferro-331 and Taliaferro-39 appear to represent the same person because: same details, small differences, suggest the sourced Taliferro-39 has precedence over unsourced Taliaferro-331
