Biography

Martha T. Talley b. 1792, Hanover County was the daughter of Rev. Elkanah Talley, an Episcopal Minister, and his wife, Mary Anderson of Hanover County, VA. Mary Anderson was the widow of Col. John Anderson of Hanover County but was also an Anderson by birth since she was a daughter of Robert Anderson and Elizabeth Clough of Gold Mine Plantation, Hanover. By her first husband, Mary Anderson had two children: Benjamin Anderson and Elizabeth Anderson. By Rev. Talley, she had: America Talley, Elkanah Talley, Robert Talley, Madison Talley, Martha “Patsy” Talley and William Talley. After the death of Rev. Elkanah Talley, in 1804, Major Thomas Starke of Hanover was made the guardian of Martha and William Talley; On 24 March 1812, the following notice appeared in both The Richmond Enquirer and The Virginia Patriot: "Married at res. of Maj. Thomas Starke, on Thurs. last (March 19) Mr. Thomas Satterwhite of King William Co., to Miss Martha T. Talley of Hanover." She married second, 6 May 1820, Neil Buchanan Gay.

Her first husband Thomas Williamson Satterwhite d. 1819 and a survey of his lands was recorded in King William County. The survey was made by Thomas Dabney, Esq., for the purpose of dividing the land into equal parts "As to quantity and to quality." Martha T. (Satterwhite) Gay was allotted 587 acres as the widow's dower. Apparently she continued to live on this land, even after her marriage to Neil Buchanan Gay.

After their marriage, Martha and Neil Gay moved to Fluvanna County, VA, where the following children were born: William Gay, Neil Buchanan Gay, Jr. b. 1827 d. 1906, Martha Gay, Pocahontas V. Gay and Ann Caroline Gay. Martha Talley Gay died in Fluvanna County, VA, on 28 April 1864. Further information about Neil B. Gay and his family can be found in the books about Pocahontas and her descendants.
