Mattie Tanis was born in Paterson New Jersey. Throughout her childhood, she lived with her large family on Bergen Street. Although the 1910 census demonstrates that the entire Tanis family was able to speak English, the 1920 census listed Dutch as the mother tongue of even the New Jersey born children.
Starting in her mid-teens, Mattie worked as a winder and silk warper in the Paterson silk mills [1]. After her marriage, she was a housewife.
Her father belonged to the Ebenezer Netherland Reformed Church on lower Haledon Avenue in Paterson. She and her sisters felt that this church was far too strict for their tastes. So, when they married, they did so in other churches. [2]
Following the death of her husband, she lived with her son in Butler, NJ.
