    KY 20 - Petersburg Elementary School Yard
    First settlement in Boone County. Rev. John Tanner built a block house and town began on 2000 acres he and John Taylor owned. Shawnees captured Tanner's nine-year-old son here, held him until grown. An ardent Baptist, Tanner preached in the Carolinas and Virginia; came to Kentucky in 1781; moved to Missouri 1798 (corr. after 1806); died there 1812 age abt. 81. The town named Petersburg in 1818.
