Biography

John Jacob Tanner was born about 1786 in Pipe Creek Hundred, Baltimore Co., MD to George Sr. Tanner & Hannah Snap (Neff). He married 24 Nov 1809 at the First Methodist Episcopal Church in Baltimore to Ann Belt, daughter of Leonard Sr. Belt & Hannah Parrish who married 27 Jan 1762 in Baltimore Co., MD. Jacob & Ann's children were Susannah m. Joshua Montgomery; Caroline m. John Good; John Belt m. Sarah Pugh; Hannah m. Thomas H Kneale; Charles m. Jemima Dickey; Kinsey m. Martha Cushman; Hiram m. Mary Riley; Martha M m. Mr. Riley; and possibly Rebecca born about 1837. 1830 census shows one more son born 1825-1830 whose name is unknown. Jake is found as Jacob Tinner in the 1810 census where he was living near his brother George Jr. and near the old George Sr. homestead south of Manchester in Pipe Creek Hundred. In 1820 he was Jacob Torner listed next to his widowed mother-in-law Hanah Belt at or near Dover, District 7, Baltimore Co., MD. By 1830 he was in Cadiz, Cadiz Twp., Harrison Co., OH listed as John Toner. Most of his family is spelled Toner in Harrison county, but the family of oldest brother Rev. John Charles Tanner is Tennar. Many years ago a couple Tennar descendants told me that it was pronounced Ten-nar' and that they spoke French. Sometime after 1830, Jacob & Ann moved to New Salem, Walnut Twp., Fairfield Co., Ohio where they died before 1840. Two of their children Charles & Martha, stayed in Harrison Co. with their cousin Charles, a tailor...and Susannah, John Belt and Kinsey all went to Fairfield Co., OH. In 1840 John Belt Tanner lived in Walnut Twp., Fairfield Co., OH. In 1830 Rev. Alexander Montgomery, Methodist lived in Walnut Twp. and could've been a founder of the New Salem Methodist Church in 1832. This is probably where Jacob & Ann Tanner are buried. The cemetery was laid out in 1834 and Mrs. Shoup was the first burial. (AFT-John Christian Tanner 1708-1784)
