The Tanner home was a large two story hewn log house erected, but not completed by Edward Tanner. It was a fine specimen of the fort-like residences of Virginia border days. The crevices between the heavy oak logs were firmly chinked with stone and mud. The massive chimney, built inside the west end of the house was made of irregular cobblestones laid in mortar and measured sixteen feet wide in the back. On the ground floor it was built in the shape of a half-diamond, each angle measuring ten feet across. In each of these angles was a huge open fireplace each facing a separate room. One fireplace was four feet high and five feet wide; the other four feet square. When first built they were deeper than two feet six inches, their later depth when false backs were built in. On the upper floor the chimney was half hexagon in shape and had a good sized fireplace. The chimney was twenty-eight feet high and carried its width of sixteen feet to the garret, where it narrowed to eight feet. At the top it measured six by two and one-half feet.

The original front door of black walnut boards crossed diagonally and fastened together with hammered nails. The boards had been cut with a whipsaw or hewed with an ax. It was three inches thick and hung on ponderous iron hinges that reached nearly across the entire width, and were secured in place with heavy hand-forged iron clinch nails. The house had three lower and two upper rooms. (from West Virginia Collection at U. of Va., Morgantown from Clarksburg Exponent Telegram, 1931)

They were Quakers.

Edward Tanner bought 300 acres in Monongalia Co on Buchanan River in 1773 that is now in Upshur Co.

In another report from Fairfax Co. MM (Quaker Records) A Rachel Tanner reports she had been violated by William Hacker, and he was thrown out of the meetings. This was Dec 31, 1757.

It looks like Edward is mentioned on his Upshur Co. Property in 1774 and 1776.
