Benjamin Tappan served as a Private in the Massachusetts Militia during the American Revolution with Captain Jonathan Wales, Colonel Ezra May. "This was the old store of Benjamin Tappan and Tappan & Whitney. Mr. Tappan began business on this spot in 1770, in a small wooden building. In 1809 he erected a brick store, twenty-five feet wide by twenty feet deep. The salesroom was twenty-two by twenty feet. He was first a goldsmith, but changed into dry goods, hardware, boots and shoes, groceries, and crockery. He was in business here sixty-two years, dying in 1831. The firm of Tappan & Whitney lasted twenty-seven years."
