Margaret Tarlton was born 9 Mar 1855 in Union County, North Carolina, to Richard Tarlton and Katie Haigler Tarlton both born in North Carolina. [1]
D. F. Jones obtained a marriage license on 9 Feb 1892 for W. J. Tomberlin, 33 year old son of H. J. Tomberlin and Sarah Tomberlin of Monroe, to marry M. C. Tarlton, 33 year old daughter of D. M. Tarlton (dead) and Sarah Katie Tarlton of Mecklenburg County. The couple was married by a Justice of the Peace on 11 Feb 1892 in Goose Creek township, Union County, North Carolina. The only witness, I. A. Tarlton, may have been Margaret's brother, Isaac.
[2]
She was the widow of W. J. Tomberlin. She had been living in Florida for 13 years and was living with her daughter at the time of her death. Margarett died on 16 May 1939 in Bartow, Polk County, Florida. She was to be buried in Wingate, Union County, North Carolina, on 18 May 1939. H. P. Whidden, Undertaker, of Bartow handled the Florida arrangements for the family. [1]
Mrs. H. R. Sparkman was the informant on the Death Certificate and is presumed to be Margarett's daughter, Bell Tomberlin who married Harley R Sparkman.[3]
Multiple searches have been performed on the 1880 US Federal Census, North Carolina, looking for a family that matches "M. C. Tarlton of Mecklenburg Co, aged 33 years, color white, daughter of D. M. Tarlton and Sarah Katie Tarlton; the father dead, the mother living, resident of Mecklenburg Co" as transcribed from the marriage license. None has been found that are an exact match.

The Margaret Tarlton in the last row of the table is probably Margaret Hinson Tarlton. Her husband, James B Tarlton, was the son of Richard and Katie Tarlton. James B was still alive in 1892 so that Margaret is an unlikely candidate.
The identity of "D F Jones" and his potential relationship to any of the parties has not been resolved. A search of Union and Mecklenburg counties in the 1880 and 1900 US Federal Census for men named Jones born 1800-1872 (min 20 yrs in 1892) returned no one matching the criteria in 1880 and only one result, Daniel Jones, a 37 year old farmer in 1900. Daniel is enumerated in Monroe where W. J. Tomberlin and his parents resided according to the marriage license. It's possible he knew the family.
My current speculation is that D. F. Jones moved to Monroe after 1880 and lived near W. J. Tomberlin and family. Dick is a common nickname for Richard, in use since the 14th century some say, and possibly the name Mr. Jones heard W. J. use when referring to his future father-in-law, Richard Tarlton. It's purely speculation but is my current working theory. McGee-1611 20:33, 13 March 2016 (EDT)
