Biography

Henry was born in 1894 to James Tate and Ida Garrett. He is a great x3 grandson of Leonard M Garrett, Revolutionary War veteran and progenitor of this Garrett line. Henry is a WWI veteran who served in France. He passed away in 1970 at 76 years old.

Excerpts of an email (Jun 13 2017) from his one-time neighbor, Wendy Rhea:

I have a few clippings I've saved on Mr. Tate over the years, and as his widow lived on a bit longer (Lenora) she was friends with another long-time canyon resident. I'm meeting with her daughter in a few weeks for an interview, and if I find anything else from her I'll definitely let you know! I know the Boullions and Tates socialized quite a bit from society articles at the time.

Henry was a well-respected man in the community, the water treatment plant across from where i grew up still bears his name. It's an interesting little canyon - this line of water that Henry worked on (all by himself!) is just below the Mill Creek Edison Plant, which first brought power to Los Angeles in the 1890s. The same water he filtered was coming directly (about a half mile from) from the first triphasic power plant built in the United States, and the first Hydroelectric plant west of the Mississippi. So that water would make its way down the hill, through the plant, generate power to Los Angeles 60 miles away, and the water would pass directly from the power plant to the filtration plant so that it could be utilized as drinking water.

He also lived on the banks of the first irrigation ditch built in California in 1819, the Zanja, which is the most litigated stretch of water in the United States. It's a rather interesting section of land and water history that he was a part of!
