Biography

Robert Tate was born on 27 February 1691 and christened on 27 March 1691 in St. Peter's Parish, New Kent County, Colony of Virginia.[1] His father was James William Tate III, and his mother was Anne, though her surname is uncertain, and may have been Waddy or Upham, according to one source.

Robert married Anne (Waddy) Tate (perhaps in 1714? when he appears in records of St. Paul's Parish--source is unclear; maiden name is also uncertain).[1]

Robert died intestate on 19 November 1759. His lands were ordered into one precinct for processioning and the names of six sons are revealed in those records (though there may have been additional children, particularly daughters). Robert's sons were:[1]

  • Henry Tate [b. about 1712, m. Sarah Netherland]
  • John Tate [b. about 1714, m. Sarah]
  • William Tate [b. about 1716, m. in 1740 Lucy Bullock]
  • James Tate [b. about 1718, m. Abigail]
  • Nathan Tate [b. about 1720, m. Elizabeth]
  • Robert Tate [b. about 1722, m. Mary Lea]
