Biography

Rebecca’s birth family name was Tatum. [1]

She was born about 1807 in either North Carolina or South Carolina. (1850 census cited below says NC; 1900 Census says James Riddle's mother was born SC).

According to family tradition, Rebecca married Nathaniel Riddle (abt.1805-aft.1870) on 1 August 1828 at Stocksville, Buncombe County, North Carolina, United States. (In the 1870 census for the “Cainey River” area of Yancey County, Rebecca’s older daughter Nancy Riddle Halcomb was age 44, indicating her birth about 1826. Nathan Riddle, age 63, was present and described as “insane”[2])

In 1850 Rebecca Tatum Riddle was with her husband and family in Buncombe County, when the census was listed on 26 September. [3] Nathaniel “Nat” Riddle was 45 and farming. Rebecca Tatum Riddle was 43. Children at home were John W., a laborer age 21; Hiram, a laborer age 19; Julia A., 16; James, 14; Mary, 12; Matilda, 6; and Emma, 3.

(Note: In 1851, part of Buncombe County was combined with part of Yancey County to form the new Madison County. The 1860 census shows the Riddle family in Madison County. Were they at the same home as in 1850 but now part of the new county, or had they moved to a different area? Unfortunately, the census records do not include a specific township or community name in either year, and the names of nearby families do not appear to be the same.)

By the 1860 U.S. Census, Rebecca was no longer found in Buncombe, Yancey, or Madison Counties, North Carolina. Without further record of Rebecca after that date, we assume that she died before Nathaniel's second marriage to Elizabeth Edwards on 4 September 1856.
