Biography

Puahaere was the daughter of King Tawhiao and his third wife Aotea Maioha. [1] During the 1860s Puahaere entered into a relationship with James Mackay Jr, the Civil Commissioner for Hauraki and later a Judge of the Compensation Court. It might be difficult to find two more opposing sides than her Father and her partner. It has been recorded that Tawhiao found this to be a sensitive issue.[2] There were two children of this relationship, Arihia Parearohi Mackay and Ngawini Mackay.[3]
