Biography

From Rebecca to Rebecca (Taylor) Baseden Greenhill Adams

It has been long known that Rebecca wife of Jeremy Adams was the widow of Samuel Greenhill.

In 1905, when Arthur Adams published an article on Jeremy Adams of Hartford, his wife” Rebecca had a mention of six words stating, “His wife Rebecca died in 1678 ...”[1]

During the 1950s Adams published updated articles in The Yearbook of the Atlantic County (New Jersey) Historical Society. They were republished in 1955 as “Jeremy Adams of Cambridge, Mass., And Hartford, Conn., And His Descendants.”[2] along with a short followup note in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register 110:318, mentioning the discovery of a marriage record for Samuel Greenhill and Rebecca Baseden in Cranbrook, Kent, England on 24 June 1628. [3]

In 1972, A published Shepard Genealogy with Donald Line Jacobus as editor says that John Shepard (1627-1707) m. Rebecca Greenhill (c1634-) daughter of Samuel and Rebecca (Taylor) (Basden) Greenhill.[4]

Anderson in the Great Migration Series article on Jeremy Adams calls her Rebecca (Baseden) citing the Adams Genealogy mentioned above.[5] But then in the article on Samuel Greenhill he calls her Rebecca (Taylor) Baseden, citing both the Adams and Shepard Genealogies.[6]

“The Roberts Family Of Brenchley, Kent” published in 2008/9 in The American Genealogist says, “Samuel Greenell, bp. 23 Aug 1591; m. Cranbrook, 24 June 1628, Rebecca (Taylor) Baseden, widow of Walter.” The footnote refers us to the Adams note in NEHGR 100:318, which does not mention the name Taylor.[7]

Given the first name of Walter it was easy to locate the following:

  • Walter Baseden married Rebecca Taylor 24 Apr 1627, Cranbrook, Kent, England[8]
  • Walter Baseden Burial Date 17 Sep 1627, Cranbrook.[9]

For more information, see The Greenhill, Adams and Shepard Families and their Land

Marriages

Rebecca married three times

  • She married 1st on 24 Apr 1627, at Cranbrook, Kent, England, to Walter Baseden.[10]
  • She married 2nd on 24 June 1628 at Cranbrook, Kent, England, to Samuel Greenhill.[11]
  • She married 3rd by 1637 at Hartford, Connecticut, to Jeremy Adams.[11] After her death, Jeremy married, as his 2nd, to Rebecca (Fletcher) Warner, widow of Andrew Warner.[12]

Death and Legacy

Rebecca died in 1678, Hartford, Hartford, Connecticut,[15][16] certainly not in 1689 as is frequently suggested, because Adams remarried in 1683.

Rebecca Taylor's parents are unknown. I am disconnecting this Rebecca, her alleged mother and proposing to merge her away into Rebecca herself. If you object please reject the merge, but be prepared to back up your belief that she exists.

What's the source for her mother Rebecca Unknown? Based on the history of the comments below, I can't help but think the mother should be merged away into the daughter.

I agree, I'm pretty sure she's a hangover from one of the previous identities. I will disconnect and propose the merge, If someone objects and can come up with a source, reject the merge and we can fix it.

I don't know how Richard Smith got attached as husband, but I do know he doesn't belong. I am going to disconnect him. Anyone object?

There are extra children attached to this profile: Lydia and Daniel. Objections to disconnecting them?

The copyrighted pages from Four American Ancestries need to be removed from here and Jeremy.

Let me also suggest that the profile Unknown Baseden be disconnected as father, converted into her husband Walter and then reconnected as husband. That way he will be nicely recycled. Objections?

i received this in Risley news today;

In the last Risley News I mentioned the discovery of our new ancestor Rebecca (Taylor) Baseden Greenhill Adams, the grandmother of Rebecca Adams who married Richard Risley Jr. So all of the American Risley, Wrisley, Rizleys, now can claim descent from the Taylor family of Staplehurst, Kent, England. Rebecca (Taylor) Basedon married Samuel Greenhill in England and came to America with him. Shortly after they settled at Hartford CT, Samuel Greenhill died and his widow remarried Jeremy Adams, and they had John Adams the father of Rebecca (Adams) Risley. That puts another name, Taylor, on the family tree. This line is now confirmed by The Descendants of the Founders of Hartford (CT) in their last newsletter to members.
