He was born on June 21st 1879 at Saffron Walden. He was commissioned into the East Kent Militia; later he was commissioned into the Suffolk Regiment. He served in South Africa through three reigns. With Queen Victoria he served on the Transvaal, Orange Free State and Cape Colony campaigns. With Edward VII he had the bars for South Africa 1901 and South Africa 1902. With George V he had the South Africa medal. He served in the 1914-18 war and spent time on the Western Front. Between the wars he took a battalion to Shanghai. In the Second World War he worked for the military censors in London. He married Dorothea Vint of Sunderland on July 8th 1909 at Bishops Wearmouth, Co. Durham.They had two sons. In the 1920s he bought ‘Barnfield’ in Stanstead, Suffolk and retired there in about 1930. He was a JP and a Churchwarden. He died on November 28th 1959.
