Biography

John was the son of George and Lydia (nee Barrett) Taylor. George 1812-1888 Stonemason and Bricklayer of Northamptonshire, England Lydia 1813-1846 married George on 12 June 1834 in Northamptonshire.

In the 1851 census John (age 14), Mason, was the grand son of William Taylor in Preston Capes, Northamptonshire, England.[1]

John Taylor arrived at Nelson on the ship Emma Colvin in 1856.

He arrived at the Baton Valley goldfields [2] in 1859 after having spent nearly 4 years at the Collingwood gold diggings and set up a store and a hotel.

He had a short lived partnership with Isaac Freeth, running the 16 room 'Bridge Hotel', opposite Saltwater Bridge. [3]

Two years after John's arrival, he married Mary White who had come to Nelson in 1842 as a child. They firstly settled at Wakefield and later moved to Pigeon Valley, where he purchased sections 1, 2 and 66. He named his home 'Mount Pleasant'. John and Mary were known to have 11 children but only 5 were to survive him. Their marriage was long standing , John and Mary celebrating their golden wedding anniversary at their home in 1908. When John Taylor's venture as a hotel proprietor had failed he turned to work as a bricklayer which he continued for a number of years. He later took on the life of a farmer. He was a long serving member of the Oddfellows Order and well liked in the district. John died at his home in Pigeon Valley at the age of 80 and is buried at St John's Anglican churchyard, Wakefield. Probate of John's will was granted to Mary in April.
